When Do Children Start Drawing? Understanding Scribbling Milestones, Fine Motor Development, and Early Writing Skills (Birth to 5 Years)
Hello to all my wonderful parents and fellow educators! One of my favourite areas in our family drop-in program is the art table. Beside it stands an easel, and nearby you'll always find baskets filled with chunky crayons, washable markers, and plenty of paper waiting to be explored. Every week, I watch babies, toddlers, and preschoolers wander over in their own time. Some children head straight for the art area the moment they arrive. Others spend several weeks simply watching before they feel ready to pick up a crayon. Both approaches are completely normal. When children first become interested in drawing, they usually aren't trying to create a picture. Instead, they wrap their tiny fingers around a marker with a full fist grip and eagerly begin making marks. Back and forth. Up and down. Long sweeping lines. Tiny dots. Curly circles.
